Aging Brain Features Publication from Mathews Lab
The November 2023 publication of Aging Brain features research by Dr. Paul Mathews and Mathews Lab members. The paper, titled “Brain apolipoprotein E levels in mice challenged by a Western diet increase in an allele-dependent manner,” discusses the human apolipoprotein E (APOE), the greatest determinant of genetic risk for memory deficits and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Their research determined that increased dietary fat alters brain apolipoprotein E levels and the impact of dietary fat on brain protein is apolipoprotein E allele specific. While APOE4 drives memory loss and high AD risk, APOE2 leads to healthy brain aging and reduced AD risk compared to the common APOE3 variant.
